China`s Industrial Production Growth Eases To 12.8% In Aug
HONG KONG (MarketWatch) ? China`s industrial production expanded at a slower-than-expected 12.8% in August from a year earlier, its weakest pace in six years, reflecting factory shutdowns for the Olympics and cooling overseas demand for consumer goods. The decline followed a 14.7% rise in July. A poll by Dow Jones Newswires revealed median analysts forecast for a 14.2% rise. During the July to August period, industrial output expanded 15.7% from the year-earlier period, the National Bureau of Statistics said Friday. Analysts said the slowdown could be temporary blip, and not indicative of a major slowdown. ?Despite recent weakness in industrial production growth, we expect industrial activity to pick up with the re opening of factories in Beijing and surrounding areas,? J.P. Morgan`s chairwoman of China equities, Jing Ulrich wrote in a research note Friday.

Financial Adjustment Will Take A While, Fed`s Kohn Says
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) ? Transforming the impaired financial markets into a ?safer, more resilient financial system is going to take a while,? Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Donald Kohn said Thursday in brief comments at a conference in Washington. ?A number of markets remain disrupted and illiquid,? Kohn said, despite a massive expansion of the Fed`s lending to investment banks. Kohn said he expected the tightening of credit by banks to ?overshoot,? and adding that ?the jury is still out on whether housing prices are close to finding a bottom.? In the longer term, Kohn said regulators face difficult problems about how to make sure that tougher capital requirements don`t drive even more financial activity into unregulated sectors.
